Rose The Adventurer

This one is probably my 2nd favorite story to share. We were on a weekend camping excursion at a campground located next to Nockamixon State Park. The weather was lovely; small sailboats were gliding across the lake and spring was in the air everywhere. We decided to go bicycle riding along the trails through the park. The path was really nice being bordered on both sides by a lovely natural wooded setting. Coming to a slight turn on the path we glided around and began to continue. Then we heard this horrible crashing sound as wood and leaves began to crunch. We all turned to see what the disturbance was only to discover, to our horror, that Rose was standing in the midst of it all. Getting to her in a nanosecond, we checked her for injuries. What happened? We asked. Rose told us she didn’t know how to turn the wheel and just kept going straight into the woods. We all looked at each other and laughed so hard we were crying. Eventually we continued on but every time I looked at Rose I couldn’t help myself. I continued to laugh about this well into the years ahead. Oh….yes, Rose got a driver’s license and drove around on public streets and residential neighborhoods. You just had to love her because this was the real Rose. Coincidentally, several years later our sister Judy was visiting with me and decided one summer morning to take my bicycle out for a little jaunt around the block. I watched as she came around the corner then imagine my surprise as I watched her fly right over the handlebars and landed in the street. Judy, however, DID know how to make a turn. What she couldn’t do was get away fast enough from a bee that was flying near her. I think she forgot all about being on a bike and thought she’d just RUN away. What were the odds that both of my sisters would lose the battle of “man against machine”? Too funny to this day.
