Favors For Rose

Created by Jackie 14 years ago
Being so much older than Rose brought as many disadvantages as advantages. A few of those disadvantages included allowing her sweet little voice pleading with Judy and I to take on some of the more traditional parental obligations. These little “favors” to her included becoming her soccer, basketball, and softball coaches. Looking back, there really wasn’t much for Judy and I to do because the little bubbleheads wouldn’t listen to a thing we said. I clearly remember the soccer fields being loaded with the younger male population and all the girls could think about was impressing them with the “image” that they were athletic, but more importantly, that they were available young ladies. We’d be trying to teach them some fundamentals, but they were already equipped with the only fundamentals that were important to them: boys and girls and girls and boys. Nothing more fundamental than that. Note: After Judy had been tortured into the softball gig, Rose quit the team and left Judy high and dry. Again. But the more memorable and nagging request had to be the one to be her Girl Scout Leaders. We hadn’t been girl scouts ourselves and had no clue what was going to be involved. We were actually making it up as we went along. And we had to buy uniforms to boot. We were total imposters in a world we knew nothing about. But Rose talked us into it and Rose almost always got what she wanted. And after all, she was just too darn cute to tell her no. So we gave it our best shot; even went on a weekend retreat up on girl scout mountain or some such place and drank bug juice, ate spaghettios and had to use some dark pit in the ground that gave the impression that it was an outhouse. Finding it in the dark became a bit of a challenge and juggling a flashlight at the same time was, well, you know, was near impossible. Through it all we never stopped loving our little sister Rose. We just shivered a little in anticipation of her next “big favor.”
